Best Practices for Writing for the Accessible Web

When developing accessible content, authors need to think about how users will access and engage with content both visually or auditorily. By considering the following ways to create accessible content, you can enhance the way content is searched, used, and accessed. Here are some important Do’s and Don’ts to help you think about creating accessible content.

Images

DO

  1. Think about the image’s strategic purpose. Ask yourself, “Is this visual pertinent to the overall purpose of the presentation, email, document, or site?”
  2. Add alt text to describe your images.

DON’T

  1. Add an image just for decorative purposes.

Headers

DO

  1. Use headers thoughtfully. They identify significant prompts for readers.

DON’T

  1. Assume users will understand the importance of text.

Emails

DO

  1. Write out the full text of the email so they can be read by screen readers.

DON’T

  1. Share screenshots of text. Screen readers will process these as photos and be unable to read the text.

URLs

DO

  1. Offer descriptive links with context of what is being shared.
  2. Use visual cues, such as changing the link’s colors and underlining.

DON’T

  1. Use language, such as “click here” or “link,” when referencing the URL.
  2. List the full URL when inserting the link into content.

Animations

DO

  1. Stick to an easily scrollable format.
  2. Use static images.

DON’T

  1. Use gifs or parallax features to avoid visual strain.

Color Contrast

DO

  1. Comply to color contrast guidelines.
  2. Consider the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) color pairings when building a website.

DON’T

  1. Use colors that are too close together.

PDFs

DO

  1. Create PDF files via word processors.
  2. Run tests to check the accessibility of the images and text in the file.

DON’T

  1. Use scanned PDFs where text is not able to be highlighted or be read via screen readers.

Additional Considerations

Thinking about accessibility goes well beyond simply making sure content is readable by screen readers and meeting color contrast requirements. Instead, you need to take a critical view to your content to determine if the information is being shared appropriately, so readers can understand and easily review the content.

As content creators, we need to think about the purpose and mission, not just of individual components of a digital content, but how these components fit together to optimize the user experience for everyone, especially for those with accessible needs.
